Cocobolo Archer’s Thumb Ring, with lip

Archer's thumb ring made of cocobolo wood

As mentioned in the previous cocobolo thumb ring post, the original intent, due to the size of the wood, was a Manchu style. The same applies to this version, which once again, suffered a wandering drill hole, precluding a Manchu. Unofficially, this is a mutant, hybrid Manchu. There simply wasn’t enough length to make a standard, Turkish or long beaked ring. This version is quite tall, actually prohibiting the thumb from bending 90 degrees. It fits similar to a Manchu, restricting the bend of the thumb closer to 45 and requires the tip of the index to sit on the tip of the thumb. I carved a lip, which worked well. The aperture is just right and when drawing, leaves none of the thumb’s crease exposed or pinched. It’s too soon to know, but this seems a probable style. I’ll have to practice with it and additional versions to know. And while cocobolo is a hardwood, it doesn’t seem to have the strength of ipe. However, it sure is pretty and certainly will make a fine ring for lighter draws.
