Two More Cocobolo Spoons – 03.14.2025

Here be two more cocobolo spoons. The good one measures at 12 & 5/8 inches, with the other, double-end spoon, at 13 & 3/8″.

The double-end spoon was a tricky piece of scrap that I couldn’t quite wrangle into a worthy concept, so rather than jettisoning altogether, was conscripted to a double duty version. The other spoon is a good example of a great spoon, again, being well balanced, elegant and capable. The piece of cocobolo it was made from is on the rare side and of the type one is lucky to find in substantial sizes. This was less than substantially sized, and while not the most dense piece, it is more than adequately so and well compensated for by a fine grain and pattern.

Something most of those who handle these spoons almost always mention is how they feel in the hand, noting the substantial weight and glossy smoothness that makes one want to keep holding it. When the design is well balanced too, it makes for an unusually nice utensil. This one is a bit shallow, as somewhat dictated by the size of the board used, though still deep enough to be useful.

Below is the side profile. The handle is a bit thinner than ideal, mostly at the end. One aspect of cocobolo for the use of many things is, depending on the individual piece, that as a formidably tough wood it can accommodate thinner sizes than most other woods while still maintaining strength. With the freedom that a full sized piece permits, respectably elegant results can ensue.

The double spoon was mostly compulsory wood usage, where I do my best to make something useful from nearly every scrap piece possible. Someone, somewhere, will find a purpose for it. While I tend to put effort into these, I often get lazy with the finish work, leaving a scratch or two here and there. An example can be seen below, where the basin meets the beginning of the handle.

I am building inventory, piece by piece and acquiring things here and there to make the crafting process a bit easier. It shouldn’t be long before an index of available items is up.
