Sapwood Cocobolo Spoon – 04-10-2025

Sapwood Cocobolo Spoon & carving tool

This spoon is mostly a failure. Not because of the design or shape, but for the holes that kept appearing as I finished it. I ‘d have abandoned it immediately had any of the holes been in the bowl area. The bowl was intact and the handle has three holes. I won’t say that holes are evil, but I don’t want holes in my spoons unless I put them there deliberately.

It measures 14-1/2 x 1-3/4 inches. Without the holes, it would be a really nice spoon. With a bowl deeper than average for my spoons, the proportions are great all around. However, while the sapwood on heartwood contrast looks interesting and stands out, the white cocobolo sapwood is nowhere near as durable or dense as dark cocobolo wood. This makes the white stuff less ideal for utensils that will be subject to abuse. It tends to discolor more easily too, though alone it is much less salient than when right beside it’s darker counterpart.

I’m not sure what will become of this spoon. It will probably live as a display piece. And I’m sure it won’t be the last piece with holes, as such is a consequence of frugal purchases and scrap salvaging. But at $50.00-$100 per board ft, which is a normal price for good cocobolo, I’d be lucky to make toothpicks.
